Question:

What tire sizes do I need for my motorcycle (84 Honda Ascot 500VT)?

I‘m a new rider and am having some confusion with my first tire (front and rear) change. I ride an 84 Honda Ascot 500VT w/ original rims and have no manual. I find conflicting info on the web about tire sizes. The current tire sizes are F: 100/90-18, R: 120/90-18. When I spoke to a dealer, I was told that only 110/90-18 (rear) would fit. Another dealer searched his data base and said 120/80-18 (rear). Are the variant dimensions here an issue of rider preference, or is there only ONE size for each wheel? Thanks.FYI: When I started my search, I only needed a rear replacement; now I need both. FYI: I have no access to a local dealership. I have to drive 3hrs to get them changed.

Answer:

Look at the tires that are on the bike. Get the same size. There are numbers on the tire's sidewall. Write down those . I used to change my own tires. Watch the mechanic so you can learn how. It isn't all that hard. Different manufacturers offer sizes for all kinds of riding purpose. However, don't go on what a tire looks like. You can have two tires made by different makers, but having the same dimensions and tread pattern and they will ride differently. Replace your tires with what you had before.
