i have the carpet and the padding now i just need to know what tool i need to rent to install it?
The tool you are thinking of is called a carpet stretcher.
It depends on how big the area is, If it's a small area you need a knee kicker, carpet knife, stair tool (to tuck the carpet) If it's a big area you need carpet stretcher, knee kicker, carpet seam iron, seam roller, carpet tape, stair tool, carpet knife.....Where I live ALL FREE for three days. Do yourself a big favor and hire someone to do it. If it's not done properly it'll loosen up and look bad. I am a carpenter by trade and tried to lay carpet once, using all the proper tools that are mentioned in a preceding answer. After a couple of years it needs restretching.
The term would be toolS, plural, there is a lot involved, if you have never done this before it's better to hire it out, carpet companies will install your carpet for an installation charge. After you watch them install it you will be glad you didn't do it yourself.
