Question:

What type of bit to use?

I'm going to be starting my 3 year old Quarter Horse mare in a bridle in January and I'm trying to figure out what type of bit to use. I've heard I should use a straight mouth snaffle but I've also heard to use just a regular snaffle with solid rings that don't move. Any ideas?

Answer:

I use the egg butt snaffle, you just have too remember when choosing a bit that you must to be gentle or you will have a horse with a hard mouth. The egg but would be the way to go its gentle and wont slip out the side of the mouth. good luck.
I would suggest a happy mouth or other rubber coated bit. I have both a loose ring and a full cheek snaffle for when I start my colt next year.
If the wheel absorbed part of the impact then it probably voided the warranty.
I always used the straight bar rubber mouth just to get the horse used to carrying something in his mouth. Then I went to the jointed snaffle, and I prefer the full cheek copper smooth mouth. Horses accept it well, and it is great for working on lateral movements. Be sure you engage only one rein at a time when you switch him into the jointed mouth, which works on one side of the mouth at a time.
