Answer:

I think that everyone has a different version of what metal is. For me, I know that I'm listening to a metal band when I get that feeling of power by listening to one of there song. Right now I'm listening to slayer and I feel that feeling and I know there a metal band. I agree with you that a lot of the hair metal bands from the 80s are not metal. The few I do consider metal would be motley crue, van halen and probably a few others. I personally think that both slipknot and despised icon are metal. Evanescence is up in the air in my opinion. I think that deep purple is metal but I think that they had a major part in contributing to the metal scene in the 60s. By the way, if you make a song called cherrie pie, you are not metal cough cough warrant. MQ: slipknot, I have like slipknot for a while and I consider them the first metal band that I ever liked.

I have heard that a lot. Rock and Metal is for white people only I'm Hispanic. I really don't get that but sometimes I get that from time to time. I think were finally at a time where most people know that just because your one race does not mean you should be judged because of that. Of course there is still people who think that if your white you should listen to rock. If your African American or Hispanic you should listen to rap and hip-hop. I think these people aren't ready to accept the truth. The truth being that everyone thinks differently and that everyone likes different music types. These people are still stuck in the past when it was wrong to like or think differently because your a different race. Of course this kind of judging will never go away. As long as people could think and talk people will be judged and people will get hurt. Its a big part of everyones lives.
I think Despised Icon and Evanescence are definitely metal. It was probably some 13 year old who said they weren't I have no f*cking clue what genre Rammstein is. I think they are considered metal, but that's the least metal, metal band I've ever heard. Blue Oyster Cult and Deep Purple get left out all the time in early metal discussions....they get put aside as blues infused hard rock bands, but I consider them the founders of metal. I'm starting to get annoyed by all the genre classification madness, In Flames changed to a more metalcore sound. Does that make them Melodic Death Metalcore? I wouldn't doubt if some would agree. But genre classification is really annoying and unecessary.
Hmm...this is the major problem these days. And it just doesn't end with hair metal, nu metal, and metalcore. Bands like AC/DC, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Guns N' Roses, Rage Against the Machine, even Nine Inch Nails on their Broken album, have been labeled metal countless times. Now, with regards to hair metal stuff, some like early Def Leppard, Motley Crue can be considered metal, but would one even dare to call something like Poison, Warrant, Bon Jovi metal? Bands like Guns N' Roses and Van Halen fall into metal a little bit, but for the most part, both bands stay as hard rock bands. Alice in Chains's first album Facelift was more closer to heavy metal. On Dirt, just a few tracks are heavy metal and the rest are hard grunge rock and on the third album, it's pretty much hard rock. Now to the nu metal case. I always considered bands like Evanescence as alternative rock. With nu metal, some bands are more alligned to alternative rock...these include Linkin Park, Papa Roach, P.O.D., and Limp Bizkit. However, some are closer to metal than to rock...Disturbed, Mudvayne, Stone Sour, Slipknot, etc...I normally consider them to be metal while bands like Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park are just rock. And for the record, the majority of all metalcore bands are way too heavy. I almost always consider metalcore (and deathcore) bands metal...Killswitch Engage especially.
