Question:

What upholstery fabric would be best suited for pets?

Realizing we won't be purchasing anything for a while, I'd like input from people with petsWe currently have a hand-me-down sectional with a rough grain fabric on itWe have 3 large dogs and a catAll are welcome on the furniture, and we often play insideSo the couch has become quickly wornI think the rougher grain of the fabric has made it wear more quickly- for instance, when the dogs walk or run across it to welcome daddy home from work.I'm not going to teach my pets to stay off the furniture, nor will we stop playing indoor fetchIt's fun! But I'm curious about which fabric may take the wear and tear betterI don't really care about the hair, because with this many animals, it's unavoidableI think the microfiber/suede type material may be the best answer, but I'd like to hear other people's opinionsLeather isn't my first choice decorating wise, but I'd consider itA smoother cloth might be an option, if it would hold upAny ideas/suggestions?

Answer:

Same situation here and I've been happiest with tight-woven cotton twilldenim or duck canvas slipcovers, They wear like iron and it's easy to wash stains out and brush off hair or tumble it off in the dryerActually for comfort for all of us and to make laundering less of a frequent event, I've picked up a couple of king-sized micro-fiber velour blankets to use as throwsI've got a chocolate brown one for one sofa and an olive green for the otherThe look like velvet and protect the furniture from spills and paw printsEvery other week I just toss them in the washer and dryer and throw them back onWhen I've got company we just pull them off so freinds can sit without walking away with the dreaded furry buttI always use a pair of those dryer balls (the blue rubber ones with all the little nubs on them) - it helps knock the embedded fur loose in the dryerMy oldest cat loves this arrangement - he likes for me to fold over one corner of the giant throw by the arm of the couch so he can tunnel under it and sleep.
