I learned long ago that a studded set of winter tires solved this problem. And finding a stock set of rims worked perfectly when I bought custom rims when I needed new tires. I then bought studded tires. What happens is yes you have two sets of tires BUT BY using both sets your tire life is extended and it pays for itself anyway. besides skipping the ridiculous task of chains on chain off scenario. There are now studless tires that while limited in terms of temperature due to the rubber compound can work equally well in winter. Its a matter of finding what works best for you and taking YOUR CAR next time to avoid wasting time waiting to get hit on the side of the hiway.
