Question:

What would be the best vacuum cleaner to get for both hardwood floors and carpets?

Anyone have any experience with a Dyson?

Answer:

I use a dyson on my floors and it works wonderful, though i don't use the power head on the hard wood floors and the rotation on the brush can cause damage but the normal head that comes with it is fantastic. Some vaccums have ranges where they are suited for pet hairs I am not sure about dyson as I don't have pets in the house, but with 2 girls in the hosue with long long hair it helps to have a good vaccum and my choice is dyson!
I just moved into a new place and had to buy a new vacuum. I find that a good canister vacuum. does the a great job on both surfaces. I went to Sears and bought a Kenmore.
I clean houses for a living, and personally I like a Rainbow vacuum cleaner. They are very expensive but does the job! You have an attachment that does the carpet, then another one that does the hardwood floors, plus lots of attachments to do your ceilings and walls. The Oreck vacuum is good also. It's real lightweight and does a good job also.
You simply can't beat a Dyson. I am a bit of a clean freak and vacuum a couple of times a week. When My WindTunnel broke I did a lot of research and bought the Dyson. I was SHOCKED when I used it the first time and saw how much stuff it picked up that my previous one didn't. I have had it six months and each time it pulls up an amazing amount of stuff. It is bagless and the ads they run saying it doesnt loose suction are very much true. It is very strong and is designed to have a built in 14' (I think) extension wand which easily goes up my stairs while the vacuum itself stays at the bottom. It also does my ceiling fans with ease. My house has hardwood, tile and thick burber carpet so I know how well it works on all of them. As for price, it isn't cheap but well worth it. I shopped around and bought mine at a Bed Bath and Beyond with one of their 20% off coupons that come every couple of weeks. Hope this helps!
Consumer reports just rated a Hoover upright much higher for performance than the Dyson. You can check them out on line. I use a Swiffer broom vac for my hardwood floors because all vacuum cleaners have hard rubber or plastic bottoms that scratch.
