Question:

What would cause soft and hard brake issues?

Mercury Sable 1997. Brakes got a little mushy last week, found the culprit, a rusted very teeny pinhole leak in the metal line to the rear passenger wheel, replaced the whole line, bled the brake system. During the bleeding process the pedal would get stiff, but lose that strength when bleeding to the next wheel. Took car out for run and when I braked on gravel the pedal was strong and where it should be, but on pavement, it was squishy.bled all the wheels again and the same thing, after awhile the brakes were even mushy on the gravelchecked all line, connections, hoses, back plate, etc., master cylinder for leaks--cannot find any.I do recall a month ago during a hard brake my car pulling to the right, though during my semi-hard brakes fro this recent brake issue testing, no pulling happened. I was told it might be the master cylinder, though possible, it seems the odds of a break line leak along with a bad master cylinder seems like high odds.

Answer:

If you are close to electricity, brush off the snow and then use a hair dryer.
I used an old plastic shower curtain and strong magnets and covered my windshield and wipers that way. The shower curtain was stronger than a regular trash bag, but a leaf yard bag might work good too.
Consumer Reports suggests you raise your wipers to upright position. I did so this evening as we are expecting 10-20 inches of snow! Our last snow/ice I did not do so - wipers froze - cable broke - and I had to pay $98 in labor. Do NOT attempt to engage them until they are totally free of ice and snow.and in the 'well' also. and no, plastic does not work. There ARE products that help like Rain something or another.ask your local auto supply store. Above all.be patient. Engage your defroster.and wait! that is after gently clearing all snow and ice.
ALL brake fluid spoils with time as it collects MOISTURE from the air! Eventually it turns into MOSTLY WATER which begins to rot BRAKE LINES with rust and TOXIC WASTE! then in it's FINAL STAGE it turns into LIQUID SANDPAPER! THE CURE is to have your brake system POWER BLED to remove ALL THE distilled GOO and sludge now collected in the BRAKE SYSTEM! Use ONLY genuine FORD brake fluid! FORD DEALERSHIP will charge about $100 for this service! HARDLY ANYONE ever does this, but it prevents failed SEALS in your ABS PUMP and protects the BRAKE PROPORTIONER VALVE that is hanging on your REAR AXLE. Should THIS ONE LEAK it is frailly expensive to have it replaced! it affects the FLUID BALANCE between the FRONT and REAR brakes! WHEN YOU STOP the initial brake force is sent to the REAR BRAKES so you do NOT go through the WINDSHIELD in a panic stop! Then it BALANCES to the FRONT BRAKES for more FORCE
