Question:

When I buy an new cat-back exhaust system, does that come with a new catalytic converter?

I hit a gigantic pothole while driving and my catalytic converter is broken and my exhaust is bent. Do any of the cat-back exhaust systems on the market come with a new catalytic converter? Please post any suggestions of the exhaust that may come with one.

Answer:

Usally the exhaust is separate from the converter
The phrase 'Cat back' refers to all the exhaust components behind the catalytic converter. Remanufactured converters come in many shapes and sizes. You should always specify you want a 'Direct Fit' catalytic converter. Otherwise the converter you get will generally be shorter and additional pipe length will have to be welded in place. Next time you need an exhaust component, lets say the 'Intermediate pipe' the new pipe will not fit and will also have to be altered. Napa has the best deals on aftermarket direct fit catalytic converters in my experience. They use Walker Brand Exhaust. Cheap converters tend to be the wrong size, or they are missing the threaded hole for the O2 sensor, or have some other abnormality which may cause the engine light to come on and affect vehicle performance. No it does not. It includes everything in the exhaust system AFTER (but not including) the cat itself.
