Question:

When painting the wood on an old sofa white, it turns pink on several spots?

I sanded down the wood on the sofa and started painting and now parts of the wood along the sides have turned PINK!!! That won't do at all! I've painted over it over and over putting layers on and it just keeps turning pink! I have no idea what to do! I need it to be white, not pink!! Please help!

Answer:

your problem is caused by the original sap from the tree bleeding thru the paint. you need to sand it down to bare wood and put some shellac on the stain or some stain blocker, you can get it where you got the paint originally, then re apply the primer and finish colors. good luck it sometimes takes several attempts to achieve success
It being an older sofa I take it. The older type varnish and stain will come through the paint. You can get around this by painting it first with Kilz paint or primer. You won't have to sand and scrape. Just paint. The primer is the better choice and it comes in white.
Also note that you might see yellowing of the color after about a year or so. Occasionally i've had this happen to me when the piece is in direct sunlight or rarely used. This may not happen to you, but its just good to keep in mind.
