I just bought a piece of mdf that i cut to the size i need, not to make my table complete i need to find some plastic to go on top (exactly like how you buy study desks from the shops. its that very thin sheet that just covers the table) I also would like an unusual colout like pale light green or white) i could not find the table size that is right for me so i made it myself by just adding it on top of my old table.
This may not quite be what you are looking for but why not check out 'Formica' type counter/table top products at places like Home Depot? You might find something close to the colour you want and get advice in regards to fastening it in place.
If you want the look of clear plastic, most home improvement stores sell plexi glass in many thicknesses. I would also look into glass tabletop covers as they will be less likely to scratch over the long term and can be purchased at andy glass specialty shop and hobby lobby even carries an assortment of glass table tops.....the backside of the glass can be painted to any hue you want using glass paints from a craft store! Just be sure to put a clear finish on to protect it if you do!
