Are they positioned properly? Sensitivity on those things can't be adjusted. Perhaps a different brand of unit. Also, do you use the exhaust fan when you cook? Is it removing smoke and fumes to the outside or does it just blow it up and away from the stove. If the latter, That's your culprit right there. I had the same problem and had to install a range hood that vents to the outside. That fixed it.
