I guess it depends on what you want. You can get the little ones that are in home improvement stores or you can look in the yellow pages and call a fire extinguisher supplier and get the real ones. That's what I did, if I have a fire I want to be able to throw some serious retardant on it.
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is basically a secure connection between two devises and is not going to do what you want. Also, connecting your phone to your home computer will not help with your bandwidth. Consider your home bandwidth as a fire hose. Lots of capacity and speed. And your cell as a garden hose. Much smaller capacity. If you connect the garden hose to the fire hose you are not going to get any more capacity out of the garden hose as it is the weakest link in the process.
Some models will chirp when the battery is in need of a replacement soon. The light may simply be a coincidence. :) Try replacing that 9v!
