Question:

Where can I get solid sheets of plastic?

I'm planning on custom building an aquarium lid for my 10 gallon. Where should I go or who should I ask to find out where to get a flat piece of plastic similar to the plastic regular lids are made out of, maybe a little thicker?

Answer:

Try your local hardwarestore or home improvement store an d if the sheet is too big ask them to cut it.
lowes. Thats where I got mine. I dont like the standard tank lids so I got that piece and custom cut it so that the water from my air curtain woudnt splash out so quick. I was putting roughly a gallon to a 1.5 gallons of water a week before adding the plastic cover.
Lowes or Home Depot would have this. Any home improvement store should. What you want are sheets of acrylic, and they come in predetermined sizes and thicknesses. If there isn't 1 in the size you need, you can have it cut there, or do it yourself. Just a piece of advice, get a sheet a little thicker than you think you actually need. The acrylic will bow over time if there's no center support if the tank you're covering is 24 inches or more. That's the smallest that I've used acrylic for myself, and I had to keep flipping the covers to keep them flat.
glass shops or large lumber type stores like home depot or diamond have plexiglass. You can get it in different thicknesses and cut it to fit your tank. It's way cheaper than getting the tops from aquarium places, and it's easy to drill holes where your tubes go. for a small tank like a 10 gal, go to the glass/window store first as they probably have left over peices cheap and will cut them to your specs. good luck.
you should go to a local glass shop they have a variety of different type of glasses or plastic if that's what you are looking for.you can choose form the thickness you want it and then you can cut it to make it fit in your tank.
