That is rediculous. That man should be reported to the company that he works for. If you know someone who does A/C work they may be able to solder the tubing for you at a better rate.
i have heard of 1/2 inch copper pipe and 3/4 copper pipe .but don't matter do it your self very easy job .go to hardware store and get small torch ,flux, soldier, pipe wire brush for the size pipe that it is .go online and search for video of how to do the job .make sure the pipe is very clean .or you can replace joint with compression fittings .but you still need torch to undo the joint
