I am building a computer and decided to go with an intel processorI am having trouble on deciding on an Intel I7 3rd generation ( Ivy Bridge) processoror an Intel i7 extreme series processorThe extreme series sounds like it would be better (mainly because it has the word extreme in front of it)? But Intel says it's the previous generation processorIt also says they are meant for gamersMy machine will be designed to game but I would assume that the newest generation processor would be best for gaming? not the extreme series from a previous generation? Do they even have an ivy bridge extreme series processor? Any and all information would be nice along with any suggestions on the best processor for my money.Thank you!!
Do NOT get i7 processors for gamingIt will be a waste of moneyAlthough i7 is branded as the top of the range processor, the only main advantages are the slightly higher clock speeds (which are not important - I'll explain more down) and the ability to hyperthreadMost games will not make much (or any!) use of hyperthreadingIf you were a 3D designer or video editor, then hyperthreading would be very useful to youBut you want to do gaming, so it is not usefulGet an overclockable i5 processorI would completely recommend the i5 3570K (Ivy Bridge) or i5 2500K (Sandy Bridge) processorIt has a slightly less clock speed than the top-range i7 processor, BUT it can be overclocked (boosted) to increase its clock speed to above an i7 processorAsk around and look on gaming forumsYou'll notice that most gamers will have an i5 2500K (2nd gen) rather than an i7 processorBelieve me;-) Lastly, and this is the MOST important point, the processor is not the main component for gamingWhat is much more important is your graphics cardYou will need a good graphics card to run most gamesEven if you had the best processor available, but a rubbish/integrated graphics card, then you would not be able to play most of the modern games available.
