I found this response on the kiddie website for their smoke detectors. Mine is hard wired and it does the exact same thing when it gets cold. Q) My smoke alarm seems to have started to chirp at certain times during the day or night, why could this be? When the temperature drops the voltage to the battery reduces which will cause the unit to chirp. As the temperature rises so the chirping will cease. This behaviour normally denotes that the battery needs to be changed but this could also happen on cold nights when the house is unheated.
You can run an overhead or underground cable between buildings if it is properly protected and made with materials designed for the purpose. You might consider a wireless zone for the interim, while you price out the hardwired options. For instance, would it make sense to run a low-voltage zone wire to the guest house, rather than 120VAC? Are there any existing cables providing power or signals to/from the guest house? You can run a SmartHome X10 or the like, using a transmitter plugged into power at the guest house and a receiver plugged in near the alarm panel, with its output tied in as a dry contact. There are also wireless X10.
