Question:

Which tyre size to get?

Hi guysHow to check which tire size fits on which rim?For example a 215 / 55 / R17 tire. Now I know that 215 is the width of the tire.55 is the height of the tire from the rim.R17 is the size of the wheel in inches. Now how to know what is the width of (RIM) so that the tire above fits ?Cause the rim says 7x15.Thanks in advance!

Answer:

Police cars commonly used this rim size before the Crown Vic's went to 16's, and they ran 225/70/15 tires with great success. I've run 235/60/15's on this rim size with no problems. However, what car is this going on? It may be the car rather than the wheel that dictates your max tire size. to answer you question intelligently, we'd have to know more. But 215/55/17 will definitely NOT fit.
For safety, the tyre should not be more than 2 inches wider than the rim. So if the rim says 7 x 15 or 15 x 7, it is 7 inches wide. You can safely put a 9 inch wide tyre on it. Convert 9 inches to mm. 9 x 25.4 228.6 so you can put a 215 wide tyre on it. You made an error about the 55. 55 means that the height is 55% of the width. So 215 x 0.55the height of the tire. Remember that the height x 2 plus the wheel diameter (17 inches) is the diameter or total height of the whole thing.
Understanding your tire size the rim you are speaking of is for a 15 tire with a width of 7 so the rim and tire in your description do not match up you need a rim that is whatever width you want without chance of hitting or rubbing the inside of the wheel well and a rim size 17 For example: say you could have a tire no wider than a 7 or it would rub on the wheel well the rim size you would need is a 7x17 or smaller in width of course.and keeping the same 17 rim size.
