I assume you are talking about a stand alone smoke detector and it is not wired to any other detectors. If you aren't doing anything that could cause one to go off (using oven, toaster, stove nearby) then I think I'd start by changing the battery if you haven't done so in awhile. If that doesn't fix it, it's possible that it's just dirty. Try using some canned air to blow it out or use a vacuum cleaner attachment to remove the dust. If that doesn't do it, I think I'd just replace the unit. Most stand alone battery operated units can be replaced for about $10.

Dead battery, loss of Home power, Cooking , it will have a 16v battery, it should be changed annually.
are you afemale? try not useing perfumes near the unit as this will set the unit of easily,also some unit are very sens. to arosol sprays . if your not using these producks and theres not an excesive amount of heat in the house along with cooking try replacing the unit ,as with most elec. componats these days can come direct from the factory with defects.
