Question:

Who can tell me how to cover a boat hull with copper sheating?

Hello, I need to cover the hulls of a 24 m catamaran with copper foil or plate. I am wondering if someone can help with this rare technique: everyone uses chemical anti fouling these days and it seems that the old and best technique has disappeared.

Answer:

they used to nail it to the wooden hull. That wont work. I have also pondered doing this. But pondering is as far as I got. Why dont you just do a small section and see what happens.
There is a reason it is rare now. There are better and more cost effective alternatives, such as an epoxy coating with a large percentage of copper powder. If boats 100 years or more ago had the chance they most certainly would have used it. Sheet copper is more likely to get stolen now days - try and keep copper water pipes at a building site! Seriously - why would you nail copper to a lovely hull in this day and age? It was used because there was little alternative - not 'cos it was better, it was all there was!
