Answer:

Hotels in Japan can be full in Dec and early Jan easily. Around Dec 28 - Jan 4 is new year holidays in Japan. Lots local shops would be closed or shorten opening hours.
the only thing 4wd helps with is getting going and a little bit with cornering, it doesnt do anything when it comes to stopping. the key to safe driving in the snow for any vehicle is good tires with at least 4/32 of tread depth. with ice, you need studs, otherwise nothing will grip the ice.
Hi, for the period that you are traveling in these 3 countries, Singapore i usually having its wet season. Monsoon rain is the norm so you can expect wet days. Good thing is that the sales will be ongoing for the Chinese new year after the Christmas sales, so, sales will be endless whichever day you arrive. Temperature range in the day will be from 28-31 deg C, dropping to 24 deg C. So light dress with a brolly will be good. Or a light windbreaker. Thailand is still in its cool weather. Expect temperature range of 26-29 deg C in the day and cool down to about 22 deg C at night. If yiou are in the highland, it will be chilly, going down further to about 16 deg C even, especially in Northern or Northeastern Thailand hill regions. So warm clothing will be good.It is still the dry season, so you are not likely to expect rain, generally over the country. Except if you are visiting the beach areas in which you can then expect occasional rain. It is winter time in Japan, as you can expect in the US. Temperature will be below 10 deg C and you can expect snow. So much warmer clothes will be required. I guess you will be familiar with this typw of weather. So, it will be warm, even hot if it is not raining or cloudy in Singapore, cool in Thailand and cold in Japan.
my advice is don't bother with japan, it will be cold and expensive compare to thailand. you can fly into singapore for a week then fly to phuket island for a week in the sun and surf, then to bangkok for a few days then to chaing mai and chaing rai up north for a few days. then back to bangkok to fly home.
