Question:

Why a car has to be in neutral to be hoisted - HW Q for auto?

my boyfriend has auto homework for school he has to explain why a car has to be in neutral to be hoisted. Anyone know some good reasons why? thnx so much.

Answer:

so as to not strip the transmission
I have never put one on the lift in neutral. I have put thousands of cars on a lift. He needs to obtain that answer from his book, or notes. I have never heard of that? Once the vehicle is off the ground you may need to put it in neutral to do certain jobs such as axle repair. We have always put our vehicles in park, then positioned the lift legs under the jack points.
Nobody puts them in neutral to hoist them- always in park. If you mean to hoist and then tow, that requires them in neutral.
