HI, Expensive is a relative term. You need to get more objective here. Being a rug manufacturer in Agra , India ; I feel that my customers (who import the rugs) charge a King;s ransom when they sell a rug made by me to the retailer, but what the retailer charges from the consumer is even more than a Kings ransom. But still, a 100 year old rug going for USD 30,000 will appear cheap to me while a newly made rug of the same size and design going for USD 3000 will appear expensive to me. Yours question asks why are rugs so expensive, the reason behind it is the time, patience , skill and labour that goes behind making each and every one of these timeless beauties. An oriental rug of size 8' x 10' takes upto 4-5 months and 5 weavers to make. Thats a lot of time. A 8x10 rug may have anything between 640K Knots to 1.7 million knots in it depending on its quality. Each knot is tied by hand. IF you take out the price per knot it will be much less than a cent. Each knot takes an average of 7 seconds to tie. Now think, is the price you pay too much when compared to the labour behind the rugs? If you ever happen to come to Agra, call upon me and I will take you to the looms where the rugs are woven. Then you will truly come to appreciate the value of these rugs. Also, in case you want a rug , but the price seems to much, try buying directly from a rug making country like India, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey. This way you will be able to cut out the importers retailers margin. You can also order a custom rug based on your size/color/design at no extra cost.
