Question:

Why can't America shut off power for two hours a month?

If global warming is as bad as Scientists say, two hours a month without power seems like a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things. I'm sure theres a way to keep hospitals running and emergency services running. All shops would have to lock down I guess people would start rioting or something, but I would think there would have to be some sort of way to covertly have different towns and counties shut down for a couple hours discretely each monthmaybe at night when people are sleeping? Just a thought.

Answer:

A nice thought but not practical, power can't be saved for later and if it was the world is a 24/7 operation, with never a good time to shut it down. Acid rain was going to destroy us at one time, now nobody mentions it
I get my opinion isn't really that important, however I'll say it anyway. Its selfish for people to think that one person can't do s***. They're giving up because its easier for them to sit back and live in their tiny bubble without any slight interruption to how they do things. And to say we aren't A problem (maybe not THE problem, but we contribute) is a lie as well. Americans eat a lot of meat and the majority of the Co2 immersions you're talking about is coming from the farms. It would be a far more proactive move if everyone in America would suddenly turn vegan, but people don't want to change like that. So what we ideally would have to resort to is drastic measures like you suggested. I've read that turning off your refrigerator for example for like two hours can help reduce your personal Co2 output. So you may be thinking to multiply that to a larger scale. Electric companies have the ability to control who has power and who doesn't (thus power getting shut off when you don't pay your bills) so what ever that Sorry granny you want to live but are going to die is irrelevant. It would take a lot of collaboration and a lot of work to do this but it could be done and it would help. But its not the solution, it's a quick fix. It's not saving power for later it's slightly reducing the amount of output for a short period of time. Again, no one wants to not have power, so no one here is going to agree with you. (Sorry) To anyone who thinks its a myth, it very well could be. But what if you're wrong? Itll take Manhattan to disappear over night like Atlantis to convince some people. Don't be discouraged! At least you're thinking of solutions to a possible problem, rather than ignoring a possible problem and leaving it up to other people to find the solution. :)
Why can't America shut off power for two hours a month? This reduces fossil fuel consumption by 0.1% to 0.2%. Those resources that make power, are not all fossil fuel powered. And this reduction is negligible. Besides, for the last few months, my power has been off at least this much If global warming is as bad as Scientists say, two hours a month without power seems like a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things. And produce NO measurable effect. I'm sure theres a way to keep hospitals running and emergency services running. Backup diesel generators in all cases, so we move from hydroelectric, nuclear, and fossil fuels with50% thermal efficiency, to fossil fueled generators with less than 33% thermal efficiency there. All shops would have to lock down I guess people would start rioting or something, Not in my neighborhood. We pretty much wander around to see who all had been blacked out too. but I would think there would have to be some sort of way to covertly have different towns and counties shut down for a couple hours discretely each monthmaybe at night when people are sleeping? Just a thought Minimum power usage then, so minimal effect. You'd need to turn it off in mid-afternoon during peak demand. And all the traffic lights stop working. Did you see Live or Die Hard? Either 9 persons in 10 needs to die, along with the support staff of plants and animals, or we need to live differently. Some incremental steps that will have some detectable effects: - ground all non-emergency aircraft flights, forever; - remove all dams (slowly of course), and stop all wells, and use solar power to coalesce water needs from the air; - ban all personal automobiles from cities, right after you implement mass transit that is faster than riding horses, to all in-city destinations.
Of course it would depend on the power source. It is not the use of electricity that is causing problems to the global climate, but how it is generated.
So you are saying that we should take drastic action when we are coming out of a known cool period? That is like saying that the temperatures in March are warmer than January and February so we need to take actions to keep the temperatures of January and February. Take a look at who is pushing the climate change, the UN and Governments that want to control where and how people live.
