Question:

Why do bulldozers or road graders have white pods on poles attached to their blades?

There is some road construction going on in my town and there are a couple of bulldozers and a road grader with a white pod attached to a long (6ft?) pole that is fixed to the blade. My best guess is that this is some sort of GPS device, but figured somebody here might now. Thanks!

Answer:

this is simply so the driver/operator can see where the blade is... otherwise he might trash someone's car, etc., see?
Guide lines (reference) to see where the edge of the blade is working the road.
They could be using GPS, but not that configuration. As others suggested, it could help the operator more accurately position his blade. It's more likely to help other operators know where he is. It's most likely so an observer can use it like a range marker navigation aid to tell the operator to veer more to the right or the left. If the driver is in the right place, his pod will line up with a survey marker.
