Question:

Why do windshield wipers on cars sweep toward the driver and not away?

On vehicles all windshield wipers start horizontal and when turned on raise to sweep water to the left pushing everything to the driver‘s side. Why is it not designed to push all debris toward the passenger?

Answer:

On older Porsche 911s it pushes from left to right. So, not all wiper configurations are the same as you state; just the ones you've seen.
If i'm not mistaken it does push stuff toward's the passenger when the wipers go down. If you can think of a better wiper then hell invent something and become a millionaire. Just like the guy who invented spinners on wheel's
The definative answer from the engineering aspect is, the arc of the wiper is at the highest and covers the most visual area when the wiper is moving towards the drivers side, thereby giving the driver more and better vision. If the wipers were going the other way, the top corner of the windshield would not be cleaned off, causing a blind spot for the driver. On right-hand drive cars in other countries, the wipers push towards the right.
