Why do windshield-wipers push the water towards the driver instead of away?

Answer:

Since they go from side to side, the wipers move the water across the windshield in both directions, but ultimately off towards the side of the car. I can't think of any way to improve the design.

their goal is to push water towards the edge of the windshield. different vehicles operate different ways as far as where the wipers start from, but they all push the water to the edge of the windshield
