Question:

Why does my windshield wiper fluid smell really badly like strong ammonia or basically very strong cat urine?

I just bought a little car and I love it, but the windshield wiper fluid smells horribly like cat pee :( Does anyone know how to drain the fluid or any suggestions, the car is an m reg fiesta si

Answer:

I have never smelled any commercially available windshield washer fluid that had the stench that you describe. Perhaps the previous owner mixed up his own concoction to save a buck. The reservoir really doesn't have a drain as such - toy can simply disconnect the hose and run it out or remover the reservoir and dump it out - this may be the best way because then you'll be able to thoroughly clean it out before adding new fluid.
Some people clean their windshields with ammonia. It stinks, but it get the glass clean. Put a hose in the tank and run it until it floods out all the old fluid. If you want to put something other than water in, siphon the water out or suck it up with a turkey baster.
Windshield washer fluid is made with ammonia, as are most glass cleaners. Water will not remove bugs and road film from your windshield, so what else is there? Nothing that I know of and I have been driving for more than 50 yrs.
