I get that the rotation of the moon is today locked to its orbital motion around earth, but is it because of the earth or suns mass, or because the more has an elliptical orbit, or what. I don't get why this is..

Bones, Crusher, Bashir, the Doctor and Phlox Yes, it's all becoming so clear now!
It depends on the kinds of sensors the fire alarm system has. If it only detects high temperatures, then the smoke machine won't set it off. But if it detects smoke, it *might* get set off - there are two main kinds of smoke sensors: photoelectric vs. ionizing. Each is better/worse at detecting different kinds of fires. Photoelectric sensors detect smoke by seeing light reflecting from it, whereas ionizing detectors sense the smoke particles. Fancier systems have both types of sensors. Bottom line - you need to ask the ballroom. They'll probably know the answer, or they'll tell you it's better to be safe than sorry.
