Question:

why iron ore is crushed with coke?

I know that during the process of iron production, Iron ore is always crushed with coke and preheated to give out small lumps with many holes. They are put in the blast furnace afterwards. But why iron ore has to crush with coke before it is fed into the furnace? Why don‘t just put iron ore and coke into the furnace?

Answer:

I believe it has something to do with the fact that iron ore comes as is with the contamination of oxygen and in order to produce pure iron you must remove the oxygen (in other words, eliminate all iron-oxygen bonds). A way of doing so is to mix the iron ore with coke which is rich in carbon and these carbon-oxygen bonds will take over leaving iron free. I believe this is a very simplified way of desribing the process and reason for this this method, you should pedia iron ore, I think they might have this information on there. Or they should! Hope this helps! ) Good luck! Love, Mary ?
