why is most lithogenous sediment composed of quartz grains? What is the chemical composition of quartz?

Answer:

Try and scratch some glass with it. Apply light pressure, scratch the glass, and then rub it to make sure it isn't a streak of the mineral left on the glass. Quartz is the most common mineral that can scratch glass. About the only common things that you could confuse it for using this test would be zircon.
