Question:

Why is my car making a noise when i brake?

I have a 1998 chevy cavalier and today when i when to stop real fast my brakes made some kind of noise i dont know if you‘d call it knocking but it only happens when i slam on brakes. I checked my brake fluid and its not to the max line could that be the problem? It doesnt make a sound when i slowly put on brakes like normal.

Answer:

I suspect a combination of two things. I had an old van that started locking up one rear wheel when I stopped and the mechanic found that the brake cylinder was leaking a bit of fluid into the drum. Together with brake dust, it made a sticky goo that locked up the wheel at the slightest pressure on the brake. So it came to this horrible screeching halt no matter how gently I braked. Fixing the wheel cylinder and cleaning out the drum fixed it. My neighbor had the same thing happen as that and had a car similar to yours. It WOULD have come to a horrible screeching halt but the anti lock brakes kept that wheel from locking completely. But it came through as a knocking sound as the brake rapidly seized and released.
could be the Anti Lock Brake system functioning normally. you mentioned it only happens when you slam on the brakes, and the system is designed to work in that situation. I've been a mechanic now for 4 years and i spent 2 years in an automotive technology school
A motorcycle takes farther to stop from a given speed than a car. Longer time, longer distance. Because a bike just doesn't have as much rubber on the ground, it doesn't have as big of a 'contact patch'. Bikes have ABS systems today that probably help them stop better and safer, but they will still take longer to stop than a car.
ought to bypass to a brake save/respected mechanic/storage. feels like your brakes are shot super time.and function them exchange your brake fluid too. would to boot have something of your vehicle checked over. Oil/clear out replaced, transmission serviced, tires balanced and circled. i'm no longer able to enable you comprehend the fee so which you ought to bypass someplace you/vehicle guy(s) chum trusts for the estimate. The brakes are the utmost undertaking for now.
