A combination of skin oils, sweat and dirt. You should be cleaning the arms with a good grade of leather cleaner every week. Consult the furniture store where you bought the sofa, or the cleaning instructions that came with it. Remember, a leather sofa is like you skin. It can dry out, it can get dirty and it needs to be washed. But it doesn't need deodorant.
its the builed up of oil sweat and dirt i mena we use the arm rest for our arms right? so there goes your answer so start cleaning it frequenlty b/c if you dont it'll just get worse.
