Why is my direct-wire fire alarm chirping like it needs a new battery?

I have three fire alarms in my house - one that is battery only, and two that are direct-wire that do not take batteries. I took those two apart and there is no battery, nor wires to hook up a battery. One of the direct-wire alarms chirps every few minutes. Is it trying to tell me it needs to be replaced?
