Question:

Why is the mechanical property of steel superior to that of pig iron?

Why is the mechanical property of steel superior to that of pig iron?

Answer:

Common sense!! The difference between steel and iron is carbon content. Pig iron contains high carbon content and is brittle. When used as a machine, it does not meet the requirement of strength
Steel is a general term for an iron carbon alloy with a mass fraction of carbon between 0.02% and 2.06%. Steel has not only good plasticity, but also steel products with high strength, good toughness, high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, easy processing, impact resistance, easy to refine and other physical and chemical applications, therefore, mechanical properties superior to iron.
Pig iron is an alloy of iron and carbon carbon content more than 2%, pig iron carbon content is generally in 2.11%--4.3%, including C, Si, and Mn, S, P and other elements, is the use of iron ores in blast furnace smelting products. Pig iron performance is hard, wear-resistant and casting good, but pig iron is crisp, can not forge.
