Question:

why is the United States pressuring israel to stop the settlements in the West Bank?

Do they want the West Bank to be part of Israel or the future Palestinian state? (If there will be one)

Answer:

To try and create some peace in the region, while Palestinians are still getting dispossessed from their land peace is impossible and things like terrorism and insurgency are encouraged.
That's the greatest contention between Isaeli Jews and Palestinian arabs.
You forgot one wordillegal settlements in the west bank. This problem cannot be solved by the US, who allies with Israel, and arms their enemies at the same time.
The West Bank is considered occupied territory. Meaning, the Israeli's are the occupying power in a foreign country. So, the 1949 Geneva Convention states that an occupying power will not settle their citizens in an occupied territory. Israel has, and is, doing just that. So, the settlements are illegal. In my opinion, this could all be settled if the world would renounce all religion and begin to treat each other as equalsbut, it's just a pipe dream of mine :)
It's just another example of American appeasement. Our leaders think that if we pander to one Islamic group then they all will love us. I know that there are many Muslims that love America but there are radicals who we think we can convince to love us and not terrorize us because we are backing an Islamic cause.
