Question:

Why would the smoke detector above the furnace and water heater be going off for no aparent reason?

I don't smell gas or any fumes, or feel excessive heat. It does not go off when the smoke alarm device is sitting on the washer, only when it is on the ceiling. I'm worried and I don't know what to do. I checked the battery, and it is still good. At the time it went off, the air conditioning had been on, but we had turned it off and the doors and windows were still shut. This smoke alarm, furnace, and water heater are on the lower level of the house.

Simply, water is an electrical conductor. They don't want to die. Having said that, water hosing can be used to wash down insulators on high voltage electrical distribution lines. The trick, however, is the water blast is interrupted at short regular intervals, so there is no direct connection between bursts of water.
They 'Birmingham’s Police Commissioner Eugene “Bull” Connor, a staunch segregationist, promised bloodshed if demonstrators continued to defy the law. When the city’s jails became crowded with thousands of demonstrators and there weren’t enough squad cars to make arrests, Conner, whose authority extended to the fire department, ordered hoses to be turned on demonstrators.' Bull Connor was a LIFETIME Democrat. He NEVER joined the Republican Party.
