Question:

Wicca - Why does a Clear Quartz hurt to hold?

Every time I pick it up, it burns in my hand.

Answer:

Quartz has a certain modulation of frequency which is used in some watches to determine the length of a second.
the quartz? it is a kind of stone that can generate electricity through wires.. that is why quartz watches does not posses batteries, or some quartz watches posses batteries to supply electricity it needs to make the watch work..
In a quartz watch, a small quartz crystal is used as reference oscillator, providing a highly accurate digital clock signal, which can be divided down to drive the actual mechanical parts of the watch . The quartz crystal functions much like a tuning fork. Quartz is piezo-electric, which means that an electrical charge changes the shape, and changing the shape produces an output elecric charge, as well. Using this property, the crystal can be made to vibrate at it's resonant frequency, like a tuning fork, by applying an appropriately controlled electric charge; and the vibration of the crystal can be read back by measuring the charge that's pumped out of the crystal, as it bends. The crystals are laser-trimmed to vibrate at a fixed reference frequency. Quartz watches provided a dramatic improvement in accuracy over the previous generation of purely mechanical watches,. Nowadays, quartz crystals are rarely used because accurate osciallators can be built by other means. .
The quartz crystal is a watch has piezo-electric properties, that is when it is mechanically deformed it generates a voltage between to electrodes attached to the crystal. Watch crystals are cut to form precise tuning forksthat resonate at 32768 Hz (vibrations per second) which easily divides down to 1 sec pulses. The watch oscillator amplifier circuit applies voltage to the crystal to deform it and the crystal in turn feeds voltage back to the amplifier. The amplifier and crystal collaborate, as it were, to generate the 32768 cycle per second timing signal from which the clock timing is derived.
Mainly the price as the quartz movement in a cheap watch keeps excellent time. I carry an American made Hamilton wind up pocket watch made in 1919 and it also keeps excellent time , It never needs a battery but I do have to wind it up each morning.
