Question:

will a kitten chew up our leather sofa help?

my parents dont really want a kitten due to lack of money and the fact all our nice furniture might get trashed but i really want a kitten!what do i do

Answer:

Chew, claw and ultimately destroy unless it is trained not to. What worked for me is this: Put a dishtowel over the arm of the sofa with most of it hanging down. Put a light paperback book on the edge of the towel on the arm of the sofa. When the cat goes to claw at the towel, the book falls and startles them. They soon learn to stay off the sofa. Good luck
Probalby not chew but scratch. Just trim the kitties nails every 2 weeks or get soft paws and put them on each nail to keep from scratching. Dont worry, the kitty isnt gonna trash your furniture. And if you dont hav much money, I suggest getting one when you do since the economy is so down right now. Good luck! Hope you get one, there tons of fun :] oh yeah, whatever you do, dont declaw it! Plus i dont think you want to cuz it costs alot of money but thats not why im telling you this. cuz the cat will be defenseless and in pain and have a change of personality and its alot of hard work. Good luck once again!
I am SO glad to see a question like this where you didn't ask about declawing your kitten! Bravo to you! There are several things you can do. 1. Buy him a scratching post or cardboard scratching box. When he scratches the sofa remove him immediately and put him on the post/box. Always praise him when he scratches on the scratch post/box. Once he starts going to the scratch post/box on his own, use a water bottle to spray him when you catch him clawing on the sofa to deter him from scratching on it. 2. You can put clear double sided tape on the sofa where he scratches. They don't like the feel of the sticky on their paws and it will deter him from scratching that area. 3. You can purchase claw covers that you place over his claws at most pet stores. He is still able to scratch himself, but cannot damage your couch. 4. Keep his claws trimmed. My own cats get their claws trimmed every 2 weeks. It's easy to do and saves a lot of furniture lol. 5. You can also try buying cat pheromone spray and spraying around the sofa. They also sell it in a little plug in like an air freshener. Don't worry it doesn't have a smell that humans can smell. Best of luck with your kitty, hope some of this helps!
In one way, your parents are right, a kitten costs some money (food, litter, veterinary to be neutered) and they do scratch everywhere when not educated. Furthermore, the kitten is not a toy and you will have to take care of it during it's whole life which can be 15 to 20 years. Having a kitten is a big responsibility and you'll have to take care of it every day, even if you prefer spending the time with your friends, especially when it is very young and it still needs education. However, though time consuming, it is easy to educate a kitten, you just have to act as a mum cat and tap her (gently - not too hard) on the nose with your finger and say a loud no, but it takes time until it understands. If you are ready to take this responsibility, and you tell your parents that you will spend some of your pocket money for the food and save for the vet, and that you'll well educate your kitten maybe your parents will accept one. Good luck !
Yeah i doubt hell chew up your sofa. The cat will probaly scratch your sofa though. I had the same problem i had a kitten and it would just scratch everything. What we did is we used a spray bottle fill it up with water and then everytime he goes to scratch the sofa squart him. We did this with are cat and he doesnt do anymore. Every once in a while he will still do but now i dont even have to touch the spray botle all i have todo now is just walk over to it and he stops scratching. Now he uses most of the a scratch post. Good Luck with your kitten.
