Question:

Will my 1988 T-Bird Turbo Coupe be safe to drive if I change the braking system ABS to without ABS?

I have a 1988 T-Bird Turbo Coupe. It came with an Automatic Braking System (ABS). The normal Braking Cylinder came with ABS, but that part is not made anymore. The only kind of Braking Cylinders that are made come without ABS, but will it be safe to drive? And how will it perform?

Answer:

You vehicle will be safe. The braking system will still work fine, it will just work like if it never had ABS at all. Most of the time you can just pull the fuse for the ABS to disable it.
FYI, ABS stands for Anti-Lock Braking System, not Automatic. Second, you should be fine. I have a 99 Tahoe and a common problem with its ABS system is the Electronic Brake Control Module having internal issues, causing it to short. I unplugged it and ride without ABS. You'll still have a good brake system, minus the ABS, but keep in mind, a non ABS master cylinder might set off your ABS light, (as there will be no electrical connector to plug into), which in Virginia, will cause a failed yearly State Inspection, and probably in several other states that perform safety inspections as well. If your T-Bird is outfitted with an ABS module, or EBCM, I would disconnect all connectors from it to try and prevent this. I know on GM vehicles, this will also disable the ABS light, but I haven't tried it on a Ford vehicle.
once you disconnect one wheel sensor, you have disabled the entire system, the brakes should be fine, you will not have the abs feedback you were used to, so put the car back together, and drive it around a little bit carefully until you get the feel of the brake padal on normal brakes ok, it should not be a problem, as long as the repair work is done correctly take your time, do it right good luck
