Question:

Window security film? Does it work?

My house recently got broken into by the front door. My front door is a stupid major security flaw. It has 12 little panes of glass with 4 going vertical on each side..they just broke a window near the lock and unlocked it like that...So I was wondering if the security film works for this type of situation? Does it make it unbreakable or what and where would I buy like a 20 ft roll online?

Answer:

The security film only keeps the glass from shattering. Someone could still kick or punch it out. You should be able to get polycarbonate installed in the panes within reach of the door handle. The other option is to install a decorative steel grille over the window portion of the door. Many of these are actually not bad looking. My mom's old house had that sort of door but it had the old-style glass that had chicken wire type mesh embedded in it. They do still make mesh sandwiched glass but I think it is hard to come by for residential use and quite expensive. If I was you I would contact a security company or, better yet, a professional locksmith -- they will be able to suggest options.
Use a dbl. keyed dead bolt. You need a key from ether side. But always keep a key 6 feet from the door in case of a fire and you need to get out.
