Question:

Windshield wiper fluid doesnt work. alternatives?

I live in Wisconsin, so driving in the snow/sleet/slush is inevitable. I bought a car this summer (a 1992 VW Passat wagon), and was told the wiper fluid wouldn‘t squirt out. After buying the car, I took it to my mechanic (who my family and I have used for YEARS, and we love and trust 100%), and they said it was a wiring issue that wouldn‘t be worth the money to fix.I‘m just wondering if it‘s possibly something I could try to fix on my own (or with a mechanically-inclined friend‘s help), or what other alternatives there are.A local service shop down the road sells and installs heated wiper blades- has anyone had any experience with these?I‘m afraid I‘ll have to stick with using water bottles full of washer fluid in the event I end up in an unfortunate circumstance (I have a bunch on my front seat just in case, but would never put myself in the position of driving when I know the weather may get bad). Thanks for any help you can offer!.

Answer:

If somebody is good with electrical troubleshooting, they could fix it for you, if they wnated to, it s alot of work taking apart dash panels and probing wires, you might be able to convince somebody somehow, by like gogin down on them or somethign, there some serious time involved crawling and reachign all aroudn the tiny nooks fo the car scrunched in awkward tiny possitions. Most people arnt good with electrical diagnosis though, it may be hard to find sombody confident enough to do it, and who actually knows how to use a multimeter If the problem is in fact a wiring issue, it may cost several hundred dollars in labor to effectively REPAIR the wiring to what it was previously. by taking it to a shop. Wiper fluid can fail for other reasons though, your shop could be wrong, but bad wiring is a possible less common cause, if i determined the pump wasnt getting power, i would HIGHLY suspect the fuse, so go double check the fuse and verify its good, if not, i would then suspect a harness somewhere has come unpluged, after that i would begin probing individual points to isolate it. One alternative though is to use the existing pump, wiring clip and wires that are currently on the pump, clip them, and add a new circuit to power them, you could just get some wire, and a switch and put the switch somewhere inside your car, it woudlnt cost very much at all, a shop probibly wont do it because its rather unprofessional. If i did it, i woudl wire it with some relays tapping off exhisting circuits in my car and make the wiper pump run when i honked the horn and had my highbeams on, id laugh everytime i had to clean my windsheild and the pains of fixing it would long be forgotten. HOOOOOOOOOOONK.squeek, squeek, squeek, HOOOOOOOOOOOnnnnk. Bets of luck in your quest to have clean windows
Hi Chrissy. It just might not be as bad as you think. First make sure you have fluid in the reservoir for you wipers. Then make sure the small hoses that carry the fluid to your windshield are not disconnected or torn.Your wipers do work, don't they? When you turn your wash cycle on, can you hear the wiper pump running? You will know when it's on. It sounds different than the sound when only the wipers are on.I had a car that wasn't getting fluid to the windshield but I found out the hoses had slipped off. Anyway I had another car that wasn't pumping fluid.I had fluid in the reservoir and the hoses were fine but when I turned the wash cycle on it wouldn't pump water to the windshield . It turned out I needed a windshield washer pump. Replaced the pump. Worked just fine after that. The pump was less than 15 dollars. Hope I have been of some help. Good luck.
I get it that you love and trust your old mechanic but we must face the facts. He doesn't like screwing around with very simple wiring, electricity, switches or quite possibly a *simple squirt-er pump motor in the bottom of the windshield wash - water reservoir. When I'm driving my car in Up State NY and I want a clean windshield mine better freaking work! I live where it was -21.7 below this past Saturday AM. Go somewhere else and get the problem solved. You don't deserve the aggravation of jumping out of your car on a frigid day to wipe off your windshield, pouring bottled washer fluid on it while wipeing it off with your sleeve.
you will get a bit more horse power with the knn prolly 15 or so but it will be more where you need it with a short ram you will only get hp in the high revs not really where your going to be driving airaid is good too their secret weopon is prolly my favorite style. and make sure you get a water cover for driving in the rain or you will be hosed pun intended
