Chris T, that's funny. You're an auto technician for 6 years and you think the wiper blades move along a track? Go with Jonny B's answer. The wipers are attached to the wiper motor with a linkage. It's more likely the linkage has popped off than the motor actually being bad. In some cars, the linkages are connected with little ball joints. It could simply be a matter of snapping that ball back into its socket.
2 possible problems. One could be the wipers are not on the track. The wipers move along a track located under the windshield. If the motor is running and the track is moving but not the wipers, it could have fell off the track. It’s a matter of placing the wipers back onto the track, which can be a tedious job. Second problem could be the wiper motor. If you move the wiper and both move along the track and the wipers work sometime then your motor may have gone bad. A electrical specialist or shop will be able to test the motor and tell you if its bad.
