Question:

Windshield wipers wont work after snow?

I have a Jaguar. The last time it snowed my husband turned on the car to warm it up, so he could remove the snow. There was a lot of snow on the car so he did not realize the wipers where on. I assume they were trying to go up but could not because of all the snow. Now they won‘t move at all. We checked the fuses but they seem to be OK. Could we have burned the motor out? How can we fix? Is there a temporary fix in case we can‘t afford a new motor right now? Thanks for any advice.

Answer:

Temporary fix RainX your windshield. You might have burned the motor out, or you might have stripped the bolts that connect the motor to the wipers.
On most cars the wiper arms are attached to the shaft by a bolt and a set of fine splines(ribs) on an adapter. They are usually a soft metal that strips easily. The weight of the snow may have stripped the adapter. Sometimes all you need to do is tighten the bolt, other times you may need to replace the arm or adapter.
Generally speaking, what happens is you damage the wiper transmission - a fancy term for the linkage between the motor and the wiper arms. If you can grab one of the wipers and slide it across the windshield (windscreen?) by hand, the transmission is the issue. There is almost never a quick fix. Sometimes the linkage separates and can be popped back together. But this often requires removal of the cowl. I have actually used twisted coat hanger bits to tie a linkage together once. It worked for an hour, on the driver side only. The motors don't usually burn out from snow or ice binding, but it's possible. There is no fix for that, just replacement. You own a Jag and can't afford to have your wipers looked at?
It just muffles the sound so its nice and quiet. I hope you know 9 times out of 10 your going to lose power when installing a air intake because of cheap under hood intakes and not installing them properly. Not to mention they are annoying. You do know you own civic not a race car right?
You take everything off up to where the air filter is then you install the ram air pipe in the same place and place the air flow sensors in their respected areas and there you go.
