Question:

They had a $1 million fire in an unmanned active nuclear missile silo and didn't find out for five days?

With the number of nuclear mishaps this year, are we sure we want enough nukes to wipe out the whole planet?

Answer:

Doesn't the doors have to open up for missiles to take off? If all the wiring is burnt, then the doors can't open and the missiles go nowhere.
care to quote a source on that one.. as the only one i can find was in 1957 and surely you aren't comparing modern weapons controls to '57
The US Government has started to eliminate many missile silos because of age. But also because all we need is enough missiles to act as a deterrent force, so other countries know that it would not be profitable to attack the USA. How much is actually enough, well that depend if you are talking about China, Russia, or Iran! The size and population of the hostile countries would need to control this!
There was no danger. The room they are talking about is not connected to the launch tube that the actual missile is kept in. The fire could not have spread far enough to damage the ICBM. The reason no one knew about it is that those missiles are checked on every day but no one goes down into the support room everyday.
