Question:

Workplace forcing my husband to personal pay for safety gear?

My husband works in a factory/warehouse and wears prescription glasses. OSHA regulations say he must wear protective goggles. He was wearing them over his regular glasses for awhile, but now the company wants him to either get prescription safety goggles, or switch to contacts so he can wear the gear. Plus, since his prescription is older than two years, they are forcing him to get a new checkup. They aren't providing him with healthcare, and they are forcing him to pay for the eye exam and new glasses/goggles out of his pocket! We can't afford this, should his job be the one to pay?? Can they fire him for not getting the gear, even though we have to pay for it ourselves? This seems unbelievably unfair.

Answer:

i'd be willing to bet THERE'S STILL water in that pipe close by somewhere. if you don't get it all out you'll never be able to get the joint hot enough to make the solder stick properly. first off are you sure you have the RIGHT METAL FOR SOLDERING PIPES. if you have a washing machine down in the basement either turn it on WHILE ALL THE WATERS IS TURNED OFF and the washing machine valves are still turned ON. get all the water out. slightly pull the two pipe ends DOWN so that any water in there will come out. so, wrong solder and maybe still water in the pipe somewhere. good luck to ya.
Clean all components to a bright finish, exclude air with flux to prevent tarnishing, assemble the joint and apply heat from a gas blow lamp when the flux is sizzleing attend joint with solder which has also been cleaned and smeared with flux this should flow into the joint freely,.allow to cool before disturbing or touching if carried out correctly the joint should now be sound. any futher trouble will need a skilled plumber. any flux used should resemble Vasaline to look at, but naturally it is NOT VASALINE
I like to play the Count how many drivers refuse to use their turn signal game. This morning, the count was 14, on a 7 mile stretch of highway from home to work. Also, it's fun to watch the speeders that suddenly aren't in such a rush anymore when they see the state cop sitting around the bend under the 805 freeway. Heehee..happens every morning. They go from road rage to perfect driver in 0.08 seconds.
Why is Cowgirl telling you how to solder electronics? And giving really bad instructions too. Yes possibly some water in the pipe but i have soldered pipes that still ahd a little water. Sounds like the pipe is not getting hot enough. Are you trying to do this with an electric soldering iron? If so you cannot transfer heat fast enough to get the pipe hot. You should be using a torch. A cheap propane $30 at Wal-Mart will be sufficient. Not sure what you mean when you say the solder drips down and solidifies. If both parts to be soldered are hot enough to melt the solder ( about 385 deg.F for most alloys ) the solder should wet to the joint. As for the lead comment. Plumbing solder in the US is lead free unless more than 30 yr. old.
You should not be using solder on house plumbing It con lead to lead poisoning. In Australia no soldering of water pipes is allowed. It needs to be silver soldered which is a job for an expert or use kinker nuts on both ends these will do away with the need to solder
