Question:

Would you go with engineer or soild hardware floors?

The price is only 60 cents a sq foot but i heard there were a lot of advantages of engineer, it looks nicer becuase it goes together better, more moisture resisent etc. But i do i have a indoor door so i might have to refinish it more. Let me know from people who have it installed

Answer:

Are you one a concrete slab or putting it in the Basement. Engineered flooring is typically for those areas. Now many companies offer an engineered floor with a very thick wear layer, which can be sanded as many times as a solid wood. You can't sand past the tongue and groove on a solid wood so the Wood underneath the tongue and groove are wasted(not good for tree huggers) Also Engineered floors expand and contract 40 to 80 % less then solid wood.(depend on how many layers of plywood is used) BUT Installation on engineered is typically more because of the glue down method(Don't nail engineered floors even though the company says you can, they want you to buy) (also don't float an engineered floor unless it has the glue less locking system.) So to answer your question in a nutshell if you are on concrete or basement .......engineered with a thick wear layer.
From my experience of installing all types of wood flooring, I definitely recommend solid wood flooring, basically because it is solid wood all of the way through which is great when it needs to be sanded and refinished. Engineered wood flooring looks good on the surface, however, this type of flooring has a really thin layer of wood veneer on top of a plywood base. If something heavy or sharp is dropped on this type of floor, it will damage the wood veneer floor which will expose the interior plywood base making an unattractive blemish which is very difficult to repair. Also engineered wood flooring cannot be sanded and refinished since this will go through the thin veneer on top.
