Water doesn't 'absorb' light. When the fabric gets wet, the light is refracted thru the water and either reflects off the fabric or passes thru. Either way the reflection off the fabric appears different dry versus wet, which is why it appears darker when wet than it does dry. It's all about the refraction and the passage of light the the water. There is less light reflected in the dry situation than the wet due to the refraction.
