Question:

1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Viscous Coupler Additive ?

Folks, I have a 1994 GCL V8 with the AWD and infamous viscous coupler just replaced both front axles and rebuilt the drive shaft, and the viscous coupler is still binding, grinding and hopping a wheel when hot on turns that are getting less and less tight. The last thing I want to do right now is replace the viscous coupler. Has any used, or is anyone aware of, an additive that would slicken things up in the transfer case and squeak a little more life out of the vc ?? Thanks in advance -

Answer:

Could be the transmission - or the torque convertor.
Are you sure one of your limited slip differentials arent sticking causing the binding/tire pull. As for the transer case, put in either one of two things. Lucas transmission stop leak, its a thick automatic tranny fluid additive that since your tranfer case fluid is an ATF it should mix no problem. Or try the Mopar limited slip additive, its designed to aid in torque transfer in differentials and is required to be used in any Chrysler with a limited slip, but it might do the same things with the differential inside the 249 transfer case. either way, i dont think it could hurt to try.
Friend i have been in a Chrysler garage for 29 years and the only thing i can tell you to do is to clean out all the fluid and go with a thicker viscosity than your currently running. There is no magic cure or additive for it and the only thing id to to lessen heat over time is a thicker consistancied fluid that helps dissipate heat quicker. All you can do unless you really wanna get dirty.
Yeah somethings wrong. get it towed somewhere.
