Question:

2002 Tahoe Water Pump?

The dealership wants nearly $500. to replace the water pump in our 2002 Tahoe (5.3) it's leaking from the weep hole. I'm somewhat mechanically declined, what precautions will I need to know and any special tools to do the job myself? I've done a few water pumps back in the 1980's that didn't leak Thank you

Answer:

You just need basic tools and a little knowledge. Since you've changed them before, you should have no problem. The Tahoe water pump hasn't changed that much. It's still on the front of the engine.
Not much different than changing the water pump on a 1980 chevy 350. Actually i personally would say its easier. Main thing you will need is a special wrench to remove the fan clutch you can usually rent one from a discount auto parts store. Pump is about 120 bucks, i would put in a thermostat while your down there it bolts on to the inlet of the water pump.

i have a 2002 silverado and i had the same problem, here is the deal i am mechanically inclined and the labor on this calls for about 6 to 8 hrs i went to napa and purchased a new water pump not a newly rebuilt one but a new for around 200.00 and let a buddy change mine for 125.00 also go ahead and replace the thermostat while its out because it mounts in the bottom of your water pump they are around 25.00 but anyways i would let someone do it i looked at mine and it covers the whole front of the engine i have replaced numerous water pumps and i didn't like the mess it looked like it would be
The dealerships are ridiculous. You probably need a ratchet and a couple sockets. You've done a water pump before? A water pump is still to this day, just a water pump. The difference is in where they put them nowadays. I don't know what kind of engine is in a 2002 tahoe, but I'm pretty sure it's not trans-mounted. So get in there, pull that sucker out, and replace it! Come on, you've done it before. And pick up a Hanes manual at the auto store. It will even walk you through the process, they come in very handy. I'm a mechanic, and I buy a Hanes manual for every car I own.
